  • HPSC (Haryana Public Service Commission) is responsible for taking the Haryana Civil Service (HCS) exam. The exams are taken to appoint candidates for different state government services. As per the official announcement made by the Haryana Government, the HPSC HCS exam pattern was updated last year. The HPSC HCS mains 2021 was conducted from December 03 – 12, 2021, and the result is expected to be released in January 2022 (tentative). The candidates must check the previous year question paper.

Exam Pattern

HPSC HCS Exam pattern

Understanding the exam pattern thoroughly will help to plan the HCS preparation strategy accordingly. The candidates who are familiar with the exam pattern can have a smart preparation plan and make the most of the available time.

HCS Prelims Exam Pattern

The first exam, HCS Prelims exam is an objective-type question paper and candidates appearing for the prelims have to appear for two papers. The first paper is on General Studies while the second is the CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test). Both papers hold a weightage of 100 marks and 100 objective-type questions are asked.

The maximum time allotted for each paper is two hours. For each incorrect answer, one fourth mark will be deducted. From this year onwards, the HPSC HCS prelims exam will have two papers, but the HPSC HCS result will be prepared based on the marks obtained in General Studies Paper 1 only. However, the candidates must qualify CSAT paper 2 to be eligible for Mains.

HCS Mains Exam Pattern

Based on HCS Prelims results, the passing candidates will have to appear for the HCS Mains exam. This exam includes 5 compulsory conventional essay type question papers; the name of each paper, total marks and time allotted to each paper is disused below.

HCS Personality Test

This is the last stage based on which candidates will be selected for the several posts. HCS personality test holds a weightage of 75 marks. Each year, shortlisted candidates have to appear for the HCS interviews at the commission’s premises located in Panchkula.

The final merit list of the shortlisted candidates for HCS exam is prepared based on the total marks of 675. The candidates need to get a good score in the HCS main written and interview as marks obtained in HCS prelims will not be considered while preparing the final merit list.


HPSC 2022 Syllabus

The syllabus for HPSC HCS is quite big and hence, the preparation should be started at the earliest. The prelims is a qualifying exam which means, you should be thorough with the preparation in order to get selected for mains. This is possible when you understand the syllabus thoroughly.

It consists of two papers i.e. General Studies & Civil Service Aptitude.

HPSC HCS Mains Syllabus- Compulsory Subjects Syllabus

  1. English and English Essay Syllabus

Questions in English are designed to test a candidate’s abilities to understand and write good English. English papers include précis writing expansion, tests in vocabulary and any other form of composition that may be suitable.

  1. Hindi and Hindi Essay (in Devnagri Script) Syllabus

Translation of an English passage into Hindi.

Explanation of Hindi passage into prose & poetry in the same language.

Composition (idioms, corrections etc.)

  1. General Knowledge Syllabus

This paper is designed to judge the candidate’s knowledge and awareness related to current events. This section includes papers from historical, geographical and economic importance, with special reference to Haryana.

  1. Viva-Voce:

The Viva-voce section is included to test the personal qualities of the test-takers. This test is included to test the candidates’ awareness, intelligence, and general outlook. Importance will also be paid towards the physical appearance of the candidate. Vice Voce will be taken in Hindi or in English based upon the option selected by the candidates.

Eligibility Criteria

HPSC HCS Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for the HCS exam is based on three parameters including age limit, educational qualification, and physical standards.

Educational Qualifications Required for HCS

  • A candidate applying for this exam must have completed his/her graduation in any discipline from a recognized university.
  • Also, the candidates in the final year of their graduation degree course are eligible to apply for the exam but the date of the final year mark sheet or score sheet must be before the closing date of HCS.
  • The degree certificate/ mark sheet should be provided to the candidates before the HCS closing date.
  • Post announcement of the exam, candidates get 30 days to complete the HCS application.

HPSC Age Limit

The following are the age brackets that the candidates appearing for HCS must fall into to be eligible for the exam.

  • Minimum Age- 21 Years
  • Maximum Age – 42 years

Age for the post of DSP

The candidates appearing for the posts of HPSC DSP must follow these age criteria.

  • Minimum Age- 21 years
  • Maximum Age- 27 years

The higher age limit for the individuals belonging to an unreserved category is 42 years (excluding DSP posts). While the minimum age required to appear for the exam is 21 years. The age of the candidate will be counted from January 1, 2022, of the exam year. There is some relaxation in the upper age limit for the candidates belonging to reserved categories:

Physical Standards for D.S.P post

To apply for the post of Haryana D.S.P, the candidates must meet the following physical eligibility standards.

Note: Male candidates are supposed to have a Chest with Expansion not lower than 34.5” (87.63 cm) while this requirement does not exist for the female candidates.
